Horse Head of Gourds

This is my most recent piece of August 19, 2012.  I had thought of doing a horse’s head much earlier, but I couldn’t find suitable gourds that would seem possible.  I finally found some “people” gourds from the Welburn Farm in CA that seemed the best candidates.  Anyway, the head and neck were made from two separate gourds; the ears were made by splitting a jewelry gourd in halves, and the mane was made of human hair.  The backing is made of black walnut with frames of rosewood.  There is a second invisible wall that the horse is mounted to by a threaded screw.  I attempted to simulate a barn as best I could.  The finish is Deft lacquer.
